Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Sunday, November 12, 2000 Sunday morning’s USA scrimmage against the Miami Fusion will be the last domestic test before the team departs for Barbados this afternoon. The closed-door match against the MLS club will also represent the final time this year that the team will train together on American soil before wrapping up the 2000 season. Forward Joe-Max Moore will be the final player to join the team when he jets directly into Barbados from England after helping Everton to a 1-0 victory over Bradford City at the Valley Parade on Saturday afternoon. Moore’s 86th minute blast was too hot for Bradford goalkeeper Matt Clarke to handle in that English Premier League contest, and Gary Naysmith was there to pounce on the rebound to give Everton the goal and the victory. The remaining 18 players on the American squad will arrive in Barbados on an American Airlines flight out of Miami at approximately 9:20 PM this evening, and will hit the practice field for the first of two Caribbean training sessions on Monday afternoon. The starting lineup for Wednesday’s match, which will be shown live on ESPN2 at 2:00 PM ET (and rebroadcast that same evening on the network at 10:00 PM ET), has not yet been divulged by head coach Bruce Arena, who must also select which 18 players of the 19 in camp will be active on gameday. FACT OF THE DAY: Since allowing the penalty kick goal to Hernan Medford after the controversial hand ball call in Costa Rica on July 23, the rock-solid American defense has not allowed a goal, posting four consecutive shutouts over Barbados, Guatemala, Costa Rica and Mexico (exhibition). The United States has never held five consecutive opponents scoreless, but has recorded four straight shutouts on three other occasions (1998, 1983-84, 1976). To demonstrate the depth of Arena’s defensive corps, the USA has started the same defensive unit only twice during that four-game streak, and has utilized seven different defenders: Gregg Berhalter (three games), Tony Sanneh (two), Jeff Agoos (two), Eddie Pope (two), David Regis (two), Carlos Llamosa (two), Greg Vanney (one). This year, goalkeepers Kasey Keller, Brad Friedel and Tony Meola (Wednesday’s likely starter) have registered eight shutouts in 16 games, posting an impressive goals against average of 0.67. A shutout against Barbados would establish a new American record for shutouts in a calendar year, eclipsing the previous best (8) established in 1998.
