The U.S. under-19 women’s national team began its 2001 term with a short training camp followed by four games in an under-21 ODP interregional tournament in Las Vegas. If nothing else the U-19s showed that their defense can hold up against older competition as it allowed only two goals in the four games. The U.S. played to 0-0 ties with Region IV and Region II on Feb. 9, before falling to Region I on Feb. 10, 1-0. Offensively, however, the team has some work to do as it managed only one goal, in a 1-1 draw with Region III on Feb. 11. Heather O’Reilly, the youngest player on the U.S. team at age 16, netted the goal against Region III in the 39th minute of the 60-minute match. The U-19s, coached by Tracey Leone, finished 2000 with a 10-3-3 record.
