The U.S. tied the Ukraine, 1-1, to advance to the second-round of the under-20 World Youth Championship in Argentina. Afterwards U.S. head coach Wolfgang Suhnholz and goalkeeper D.J. Countess met the press. U.S. Head Coach Wolfgang Suhnholz “I think today overall we played an good game. I think technically and tactically we played a very good game. We had a zero on their scoreboard until the 89th minute.” On the next round … “I have been told that we are through to the next round, so I hope that is true. I also wanted to share this moment with my two assistants who have helped out so much and who are a huge part of the reason we are here: Billy Irwin and Erik Visser.” On scoring a second goal … “I think it is always very difficult to score a goal. I knew that when we were up goal we would probably need to score another goal. We had a lot of chances to score a second goal, but we just couldn’t do it, and that is sometimes the way it goes.” On if it was a different team than the one that played Chile … “I really don’t think we were a different team. As I said we were trying to play good style of soccer and we try not to give up a lot of goals. We have given up only three goals in the first three games and I think that is very good. And, of course, we try to score more goals than the other team.” On if the team will approach things differently in the next round … “First of all we have to see who we are going to play in the next round, if we have qualified. And then from there we will have to figure out what we are going to do.” On the team’s performance … “I thought we did pretty good. I thought that if we would have won the game 1-0 it would have been absolutely perfect. Naturally, because we tied the game today we are a little bit disappointed. We came in here wanting to win.” DJ Countess, U.S. goalkeeper On the 89th minute goal … “The goal was very fortunate for Ukraine, but not so fortunate for myself or my team. But really I just have to learn from it, build on it and look forward to the next round.” On if the team has improved as the tournament goes on … “I think China did a great job against us in the first game, and I think we built on that, both offensively and defensively in the second game against Chile. Ukraine definitely put us under a lot of pressure and in the 89th minute they got what they came for. It is unfortunate that it happened, but fortunately we are going to go ahead to the second round.”
