After edging Canada 1-0 in the first match of the two-game series last Saturday, the U.S. under-19 girls national team crushed its northern counterparts by exploding for nine first half goals en route to an 11-1 victory at Birchmount Stadium in Scarborough, Canada. The U.S. attack was unstoppable as the Americans built a 5-0 lead after just 15 minutes. Forward Kelly Wilson (Odessa, Tex./Dallas Sting) scored in the 7th, 13th, 34th and 35th minutes to record her rare quadruple in the first half. Forward Mary Boland (Hudson, Ohio/Internationals) scored two goals in the first 15 minutes and then added the USA’s 11th score in the 71st minute. Boland also set up two goals. Lindsay Tarpley (Kalamazoo, Mich./Michigan Hawks) scored two goals while Kristen Weiss (Brecksville, Ohio/Internationals) and captain Keeley Dowling (Carmel, Ind./Carmel Cosmos) notched one goal apiece. “The team was very motivated and inspired to play Canada for the second time,” said U.S. U-19 coach Tracey Leone. “They were excited about the challenge of solving Canada’s high restraining line and high goalkeeper that we struggled with in the last game. Our 3-4-3 formation gave us better possession on the flanks and the ability for more players to beat their flat back four. We had players coming from everywhere and we were unpredictable. And we finished incredibly well.” The U.S. U-19 women are building towards the first ever FIFA world championship for youth woman that will be held in Canada during the summer of 2002. The USA will attempt to qualify for the tournament sometime in 2002 with the dates and venues to be determined. “Just having these two games under our belt has made us a better team,” Leone said. “We couldn’t have benefited more from coming here and being in Canada where the youth World Cup will be held. We wanted to make Canada our home in a small way and that comfort will help us down the road.” International Friendly July 2 in Scarborough, Canada UNITED STATES 11 CANADA 1 Scoring Summary: USA – Lindsey Tarpley 2.
