The U.S. women's national team faces England Saturday at Legion Field in Birmingham, Ala. (TV: live, ESPN 1 pm ET, noon CT).
Boston Breakers midfielder Jena Kluegel and Philadelphia Charge defender Heather Mitts were late additions to the training camp roster. University of North Carolina freshman Lindsay Tarpley was forced to bow out from training after not completely recovering from having her wisdom teeth removed, and Boston Breakers midfielder Devvyn Hawkins had to withdraw due to an injured foot. U.S. head coach April Heinrichs brought 25 players into camp but has picked 18, including Mitts, to suit up against England.
Philadelphia Charge star Kelly Smith will not face the U.S. after suffering a meniscus tear in her right knee while playing for the WUSA team. Smith, England's top player, also missed a crucial two-game playoff series against France while recovering from ACL surgery on the same knee. England lost, 2-0, on aggregate in the home-and-home series, and France won the final European berth for the 2003 Women's World Cup.
