Second-half substitute Shannon MacMillan hit a 40-yard bomb late in the game to give the U.S. women’s national team a 2-1 come-from-behind win over Denmark in Group A action in the Algarve Cup in Faro, Portugal. The win was the first for U.S. coach April Heinrichs. A win or a tie against Sweden in the final Group A match on March 16 will send the USA to the Algarve Cup championship game as the two group winners play for the title on March 18. “I picked up the ball around midfield, cut back on a defender, then took a little peak at the goalkeeper,” said MacMillan, who entered the game in the 67th minute for Sara Whalen. “I didn’t see a forward checking, so I just ripped it. I knew it was in as soon as I saw the flight of the ball.” Striker Gitte Krogh had given the Danes a 1-0 lead with a looping 18-yard shot that eluded North Carolina freshman goalkeeper Jen Branam in the eighth minute. Lorrie Fair, who started her second straight game at defensive midfielder in the absence of Michelle Akers, tied the match at 1-1 in the 67th-minute. The goal was Fair’s second career strike with the national team. “I was very pleased with the urgency and composure in the second half,” Heinrichs said. “We created some great chances and scored two great goals.” The last time the two countries played, the USA easily dispatched the Danes, 3-0, in the opening game of Women’s World Cup ’99.
