Two days after routing Russia, 7-1, the U.S. women tied Russia, 1-1, in a closed-door friendly in College Park, Md., on the campus of the University of Maryland. Joy Fawcett’s 72nd-minute penalty kick matched Natalia Barbashina’s 28th-minute strike. The United States earned the PK when Mia Hamm hit a corner kick from the right side and the ball hit the arm of Russian defender Olga Sergaeva. Referee Lorenzo Sanz immediately called for the spot kick, which Fawcett deposited in the right side of Russia’s net. U.S. coach April Heinrichs’ team outshot the visitors, 19-2, and had five corner kicks to Russia’s one. Barbashina’s goal was Russia’s last shot of the match. “It is tough to come back after a high scoring match in front of a big crowd like last Sunday,” Heinrichs said. “But [the U.S. players] are professionals and we can do a better job of that. For us, the game is a reminder that we have to play first with our heart and that there needs to be urgency in our game. It’s a reminder that possession [of the ball] is a great thing, but they don’t keep score based on how many passes you string together. We have to have an urgency to get behind defenses and get shots on frame.” Briana Scurry, Michelle Akers and Carla Overbeck, the three U.S. veterans who missed several games this year due to injury, all started. Scurry played the whole way. Heinrichs took Akers out after the midfielder took a spill that aggravated her surgically repaired shoulder. “It hurts,” Akers said. “But it’ll be fine.” Akers is expected back for the Aug. 20 match against Canada in Kansas City, Mo. Overbeck played the whole first half, then made way for Tiffeny Milbrett at halftime. International Friendly Aug. 15 in College Park, Md. United States 1 Russia 1.
