Countdown: The U.S. took to the Hermann Stadium field Tuesday night, 24 hours before it kicks off against Jamaica in their first game of the CONCACAF Group A qualifying tournament. The U.S. kicks off at 7 p.m. Wednesday night, following the tournament opener between Canada and El Salvador at 5 p.m. Television: April 24 11 p.m. ET/FSWE (delay), April 25 8 p.m. ET/FSWE (delay), April 25 11 p.m. ET/FSW (delay), April 28 11 p.m. ET /FSW (delay). Roster change: Defender Hunter Freeman joined the team in St. Louis when the U.S. staff ruled defender David Chun would be unable to play in the tournament. Chun, who is one of three U.S. players to start all 15 U.S. internationals in the past two years, has a sprained right MCL. Freeman, who is the second youngest player currently on the team, has spent the last two years in the residency program with the team in Bradenton. He has appeared in 10 matches in 2001, starting six and appearing as a sub in one international. Weather update: With the swirling winds that have been around all week, weather looks like it could be a factor when the tournament kicks off on Wednesday. Local meteorologists have said that recent temperatures have been 15 degrees colder than normal at this time of the year. The weather is supposed to show significant improvement beginning on Wednesday, when the forecast calls for sunshine and clouds and a high of 62 degrees. Jamaica: Jamaica and the U.S. met in the final match of the 1999 qualifying tournament in Jamaica, a match that ended in a 0-0 draw and allowed Jamaica to emerge atop the group and sent the U.S. into a two-game playoff with El Salvador. Jamaica’s victory earned it a berth in a world youth championship for the first time. The Jamaicans advanced to New Zealand ’99, only to finish a disappointing 16th out of 16 teams. Stat of the day: Forward Ed Johnson has scored in the last four U.S. internationals and will be looking to put his name in the scorebook for the fifth consecutive match when the U.S. kicks off against Jamaica. The U.S. is undefeated in those four matches, and is 6-0-1 in international matches that Ed Johnson has scored in.
