The U.S. U-17s easily won their first two international matches of 2001, beating Honduras, 4-1 and 3-0. MLS signee Ed Johnson continued to pace the American attack, netting five goals in the two matches. He now has 13 goals in 14 international matches. Johnson lead the way again in the 4-1 win, scoring a hat trick before retiring to the bench in the 67th minute. Santino Quaranta, another recent Pro-40 signee, recorded the assist on both of Johnson’s goals in the second game. John Ellinger’s boys so dominated the Catrachos in the second game they did not allow a shot on goal. U.S. goalkeeper Ford Williams recorded the shutout in his first start of the year. The U.S. travels to Miami’s Orange Bowl to take on another CONCACAF foe, Guatemala, on Saturday, Feb. 3, at 1:30 p.m. That match will be followed by the U.S. men’s national team game against Colombia at 4 p.m. ET (live on ESPN2 and Telemundo).
