U.S. Head Coach John Ellinger On what he said to the team at half … At halftime, you have to reassure the team that the first half is over, that we’ve missed chances, and we’ve got to do a little better job with finishing in the second half. I told them to stay composed and keep moving the ball. We just have to keep our chances at goal realistic because sometimes we tend to get a little unrealistic with our chances and take shots from a long way out. On Ed Johnson … He was marked pretty tight throughout the game and the defender was right on his back. And if Eddie can’t get the ball and turn, he’s checking back and taking a player with him and opening up the space for another player. That really helped us open the space behind the defense. I thought we did a very good job of getting the ball and getting wide, but we just weren’t able to get on the end of those balls. Still, I thought we could have done better to get on the end of some of the balls we were able to get wide. On not being able to finish in the first half … We had four or five great chances in the first 15 minutes, and we were thinking, “Wow, we could be up 4 or 5-0.” Give credit to their goalkeeper and their defense for clearing the chances and rebounds. We had talked about following up our chances, but they were still able to clear our chances off the line. But it gets to a point, and the longer you go without scoring, it eventually gets in your head. At some point you have to get the first one. I thought some of the players rushed their chances and I thought others didn’t take them quick enough. It was just technical mistakes and guys pushing the envelope a little bit too much to get that first goal. On the half-time substitution of Justin Mapp … Justin brought a little bit of a different look, a left-footed player on the flank. Santino had a lot of success in the first half getting around the defender, and at half-time we decided to make the change and go at their defense from both sides, with Santino going at their left side and Justin at their right side. That is what we wanted to do and hopefully we could get Justin in and get on the end of their crosses. It worked out well and Justin was able to get in behind the defense quite a few times. On facing Canada … They are very tough defensively and they get a lot of people behind the ball and look to counterattack. Bellotte is a very talented player and they look to play the ball to him, and he can hold off defenders while they get forward. That is a big advantage for them, and we will have to deal with that. We played them last year and did well against them, but they have a different look than before and we have a different look. It should be a very good game with real high intensity coming from both teams. U.S. Midfielder Santino Quaranta On the U.S. performance It was not surprising that Jamaica was able to stick with us; this is qualifying and you expect every game to be a battle. I expected us to come out and get some more goals. We outshot them 30-7, and you would expect us to get a few goals from that many shots. Overall I thought it was a decent performance. Defensively, I thought we really dominated. They didn’t have any great opportunities and what they had we were able to control. Offensively we played well, but we could do better finishing. However, I think we did well to get those chances. On the Jamaican goalkeeper … It seemed like we shooting at their goalkeeper like he was a target. That is one thing we have to work on. He made some good saves, but we hit it right at him a lot of times. We just have to put it in the corners and make it simple. He’s a great keeper. Looking ahead to Canada … We want to keep this momentum going on into the Canada game, because that is going to be a huge match. Depending on the result in the El Salvador – Jamaica match, we could have a chance to clinch a spot in Trinidad with a win against Canada. U.S. Defender Chad Marshall On Not Scoring and Jamaican Counterattacks … You can’t get too frustrated from not scoring, because then you want to pressure high and then they get a breakaway like they got on the first goal. We were pushing up, looking for a goal, and we got caught on the counter with a great piece of dribbling in the corner. It was a great goal. On finally getting a goal … When we got the first goal there was a little relief that we tied it up, and then we just got that feeling that something else was going to happen. On his goal … Craig Capano found me at the back post with a great ball. Ed Johnson jumped and the ball went right over him and no one was on me at the far post. I didn’t even have to jump, I just tucked it in the corner. On playing Canada … We played Canada back in August 2000, and we won 4-1, but they have brought in some more players since then. It is going to be a great match and I’m looking forward to playing them again.
