The U.S. Under-17 national team continued its strong showing in 2001, defeating Guatemala 4-0 in a game played before the USA-Colombia international Feb. 3 at the Orange Bowl. The U-17s got two goals on headers from defender Gray Griffin and yet another strike from powerful forward Ed Johnson, his sixth in three internationals this year. The U.S. jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on assists from midfielder Justin Mapp, the first on a corner kick to Griffin in the eighth minute (who nodded it home from close range), and the second on a nifty goal-mouth square pass that freed Johnson for an easy finish from six yards out in the 21st minute. The half ended with the U.S. up 3-0 after forward Mike Magee beat Guatemalan goalkeeper Juan Paredes to a ball in the 37th minute and scored easily into an empty net from 22 yards out. The fourth U.S. goal again came from the head of Gray, who knocked in a leaping shot from three yards out after Johnson had headed a corner kick back across the goal mouth.
