The U.S. U-17 national team concluded play in the World Championship with a 4-0 pasting of Austria Sept. 11 in Port Said. The U.S. was eliminated from the tournament after losses to Oman and Brazil. Brad Rupsis (goal, assist) and Taylor Twellman (two goals) led the U.S. to victory. Rupsis opened the scoring just seven minutes into the match. U.S. midfielder Nozomo Yamauchi won the ball just inside the Austrian half of the field, beat a defender off the dribble, and sent a perfect pass to Rupsis, who was making a diagonal run into the left side of the penalty area. Rupsis, behind the Austrian defense, collected the ball and scored from 12 yards out. Austria nearly equalized two minutes later, but American keeper Kyle Singer made a fine save to turn Gerald Krajic’s 18-yard blast past the post. In the second half, the speedy Americans used the flanks to initiate numerous attacks against the bigger but less agile Austrians. In the 56th minute, Rupsis beat a defender down the right flank and chipped the ball into the middle of the penalty area. Twellman charged onto the ball and dove to head it home from seven yards out. Twellman struck again eleven minutes later. U.S. captain Nick Downing passed the ball to Luis Gonzalez, who collected the ball about 20 yards out from the Austrian goal and touched it to Twellman, who was headed down the right side of the Austrian penalty area in full stride. Twellman proceeded to blast a shot past the Austrian keeper from a tight angle to the inside of the far post for a 3-0 U.S. lead. Substitute midfielder Steven Totten wrapped up the scoring when he knocked home Marshall Leonard’s corner kick after it bounced loose into the middle of the penalty box. “Once the first goal came, we were able to relax and play the type of soccer I know we are capable of,” said U.S. coach Jay Miller. “The quality of the goals that we put together today demonstrates that we are a very good team.” Sept. 11 in Port Said USA 4 Austria 0.
