The United States learned its quarterfinal opponent at the FIFA U-19 Women's World Championship on Thursday, and it wasn't the expected foe.
The Americans, who romped to victories over England, Australia and Chinese Taipei in Group C matches, will take on Denmark, the third-place finisher in Group A, on Sunday in Victoria, British Columbia.
The Danes let an early lead get away as Shinobu Ohno scored goals six minutes apart Thursday in Edmonton to give Japan a stunning 2-1 victory that eliminated France — the No. 3 team from Group B and the expected U.S. opponent.
Denmark is led by Texas Tech freshman-to-be Johanna Rasmussen, who has netted three of the side's five goals.
''Like their senior team, and like almost all European teams, Denmark will be disciplined, well-coached and very organized,'' U.S. coach Tracey Leone said. ''It was good for us to have the experience of playing against England, another European team, to give us an idea of what we might be facing.
''We are certainly very respectful of Denmark's talent, toughness and pride.''
University of Portland All-American Christine Sinclair scored her fourth and tournament-leading fifth goal to carry Canada to a 2-0 win over Nigeria, completing a perfect first stage for the host. Canada is paired with England in a quarterfinal on Sunday in Edmonton.
Japan also qualified for the quarterfinals and will face Germany, also Sunday in Edmonton. The other final-eight match pits Brazil against Australia on Saturday in Burnaby, British Columbia.
