University of North Carolina forward Lindsay Tarpley netted her second and third goals of the tournament and the United States completed a perfect first round at the FIFA U-19 Women's World Championship on Wednesday with a 6-0 romp over winless Chinese Taipei at Centennial Stadium in Victoria, British Columbia.

Santa Clara's Megan Kakadelas gave the Americans a third-minute lead, and Tarpley made it 2-0 in the 10th minute, crushing the ball off the bottom of the crossbar from 19 yards after a feed from Kakadelas.

Tarpley's second goal, a 43rd-minute strike that pushed the U.S. advantage to 4-0, was magical. Posted with a defender at the 6-yard box on a corner kick, Tarpley lifted the bouncing ball over the defender and goalkeeper with her right foot, pivoted and volleyed it into the open net with the outside of her left foot.

Arizona State's Stephanie Ebner and high-schoolers Rachel Buehler and Kerri Hanks also tallied for the Yanks. Tennessee's Keeley Dowling and high-schooler Angie Woznuk struck the woodwork.

U.S. coach Tracey Leone gave Kakadelas, Dowling, Woznuk, Hanks, Ebner and Virginia's Sarah Huffman their first starts of the tournament. Texas' Kelly Wilson — the tournament's top scorer, with four goals — North Carolina's Lori Chalupny and high-schooler Heather O'Reilly were given the night off, and Santa Clara's Jessica Ballweg, North Carolina's Kendall Fletcher and Arizona State's Manya Makoski were used in reserve roles.

''We accomplished our goals for this game,'' Leone said. ''We certainly wanted to win our group and get an extra day's rest. What was also great was that our team played so well in the first two games that we were in a perfect position to have our whole team get experience. Everyone except our backup goalkeeper has played a 90-minute game, or more, so that's going to help us going into the second round against whoever we have to face.''

The Americans will find out who they meet in Sunday's quarterfinal today. If Canada and Denmark, the top two teams in Group A, win or tie on Thursday night in Edmonton, the United States would face a skillful France squad.

In the other Group C match, Australia and England earned quarterfinal berths with a scoreless draw. Germany qualified for the final eight in Group B, overcoming a deficit to beat Mexico, 3-1, at Burnaby, British Columbia. Brazil completed a perfect first round with a 4-0 rout of France as Marta scored a hat trick.
