Bobby Convey, the youngest player on the U.S. under-20 national team, had two first-half goals to lead the Americans to a 5-0 win over Guatemala in the opening game of the World Youth Championship qualifying tournament in Trinidad. (Fox Sports World will show taped-delay coverage on Friday, March 23 at 11 pm ET/8 pm PT.) After a power blackout interrupted play early in the first half, the United States scored four quick goals to put the game away. Landon Donovan set up fellow 2000 Olympian Conor Casey for the first goal. Convey scored his two goals on assists by Oguchi Onyewu and DaMarcus Beasley, and Beasley rounded out the first-half scoring on a breakaway. Sub Brad Davis made it 5-0 in the second half with a left-footed shot that found the far post. Coach Wolfgang Suhnholz started seven graduates of the U.S. U-17 team that finished fourth at the 1999 Under-17 World Cup: Countess, backs Nelson Akwari, Alex Yi and Onyewu, midfielders Beasley and Convey and Donovan up front. Also starting were Casey, who joined German club Borussia Dortmund this winter from the University of Portland, and three ACC players — Phillip Salyer (Maryland), Brian Carroll (Wake Forest) and Kenny Arena (Virginia), son of U.S. national team head coach Bruce Arena. While the United States dominated play, D.J. Countess came up with several spectacular saves to preserve the shutout. Guatemala is considered the weakest of the three opponents in Group B. The Americans faces host Trinidad & Tobago and Central American champions Costa Rica March 20 and 22 in Tunapuna, Trinidad. There will be same-day coverage of the Costa Rica game on Thursday, March 22 on Galavision at 7 pm ET/PT. March 18 in Tunapuna, Trinidad USA 5 Guatemala 0.
