Kelly Wilson scored two goals and assisted a third as the U.S. under-21 women's national team dominated Norway, 3-0, Sunday in Olafsfjordur, Iceland, and neared its eighth successive Nordic Cup final.
Wilson, a University of Texas All-American, set up Virginia midfielder Sarah Huffman's 37th-minute goal, then added strikes in the 42nd and 86th minutes as the Yanks improved to 2-0-0 in Group B of the annual ''unofficial world championship'' for U-21 women.
The Americans need only tie on Tuesday against Germany to advance to Thursday's final against Sweden, which clinched the Group A title with a 1-0 victory Sunday over England. Germany and Finland played a scoreless draw in Sunday's other Group A game.
The United States has won the past five Nordic Cups and six of the past seven, losing to Norway in the 1998 final.
The U.S. women outshot Norway, 22-1, Sunday, and Stanford goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart needed to make just the lone save to earn her second shutout. Captain Joanna Lohman, the former Penn State All-American in the center of the Americans' 4-3-3 alignment, shut down Norwegian playmaker Leni Larsen Kaurin, preventing Norway from creating an attack.
Wilson, who scored 31 goals in 19 matches with the U.S. U-19 team and one goal in three appearances with the full national team, scored her first two international goals at the U-21 level.
''It's been good for me to get in a competitive environment, and I am getting more confidence in front of the goal,'' said Wilson, who struggled with injuries during her junior season with Texas last fall.
''This team has really good chemistry, especially in our forwards. Tasha [Kai, from Hawaii] has tremendous speed and great athleticism, Carli [Lloyd, from Rutgers] is great on the ball and a great dribbler, and I'm more of a crosser and finisher in front of the goal. We compliment each other really well, and Manya [Makoski, from Arizona State] and Lu [DePaul's Julianne Sitch] coming off the bench really adds a spark.''
Huffman, a Virginia star who was Wilson's teammate with the U.S. U-19 team that captured the world championship two years ago, scored off Wilson's cross from the right flank to the far post.
Wilson made it 2-0, redirecting a header by Tennessee's Keeley Dowling from Portland star Lindsey Huie's corner kick. The last goal was finished after Makoski dribbled past three defenders.
''This is a great start for us, and it's great to have Kelly scoring goals again,'' said U.S head coach Chris Petrucelli, who also coaches Wilson at Texas. ''We know what she is capable of based on her history, and to have her back in the groove again is a big step forward for our team in this tournament.''
Caroline Seger's eighth-minute goal carried Sweden in its victory over England. Iceland's Erla Steinunn Arnardottir and Denmark's Tanja Mejer traded first-half goals in a 1-1 tie in the other Group A match.
