The under-20 men’s national team closed out its first camp of 2001 with a scoreless tie against the A-LeagueÆs San Diego Flash Jan. 14 at the ARCO Olympic Training Center. The U.S. outshot its A-League opponent 12-4, but was unable to find the back of the net. The U.S. took their first win of the year on Jan. 11, topping KoreaÆs Hyang Hee University, 2-1. Edson Buddle put the U.S. ahead in the 40th minute and Kelly Gray doubled the lead in the 60th. The Koreans drew one back with a penalty kick in the 80th minute. Earlier in the week, the U-20s lost to the full U.S. men’s national team, 3-1. The youth got off to a hot start and took the lead in that game on a goal by Phillip Salyer in the 25th minute, and outshot their elders 7-1 in the first half. Bruce Arena must have made a good halftime pep talk because his team came out blazing in the second half and came away with a 3-1 win. The under-20s will reconvene Jan. 22, before heading to Mexico for a three-game tour Jan. 26-Feb. 2.
