Nancy and Julie Augustyniak, who helped FFC Turbine Potsdam win the German women's double last spring, are returning to Europe, joining Swedish cellar-dweller Stattena IF for the final eight matches of the season.

The Augustyniaks, former Atlanta Beat defenders, will be joined in Helsingborg by former New York Power midfielder Heather Beem, a WUSA rookie last year. All three played at Clemson University, and Tigers coach Todd Bramble was the middleman in the deal.

Former Beat defender Kylie Bivens turned down an opportunity to join them in Sweden.

Stattena has scheduled a media conference on Monday to announce the deal. Beem already is in Sweden, and the Augustyniaks are expected to head to Europe following the W-League final four that concludes on Sunday.

The Augustyniaks are playing for the Chicago Cobras, which lost Saturday to the Vancouver Whitecaps, 2-1, in the W-League semifinals in Ottawa. The Cobras will play in the third-place game on Sunday.

Stattena (0-10-4) is fighting to avoid relegation from the Damallsvenskan. It sits four points behind 11th-place Sunnana SK (1-8-5) and five behind 10th-place Karlslunds IF DFF (2-9-3). Only the bottom two teams will be dropped from the top division.

Stattena will be home against Sunnana on Sept. 4, when the league returns from its Olympic break.

The Augustyniaks played from February through June with Turbine Potsdam, which last season won the German Frauen-Bundesliga and DfB Pokal (German Cup) titles for the first time. The twins, upon returning home from Germany, expressed dissatisfaction with the competition in the Frauen-Bundesliga but said they were interested in playing in Sweden.

Three other Americans are playing in Sweden's top division: Goalkeeper Hope Solo with Kopparbergs/Goteborg, defender Denise Reddy with Malmo FF and forward Venus James with defending champion Djurgarden/Alvsjo.
