U.S. midfielder Michelle Akers is scheduled to undergo minor surgery March 3 at the Orlando Regional Medical Center to remove accumulated blood and several bone fragments from her left cheek that resulted from her collision with Norway’s Linda Medalen in the match against the FIFA World Stars on Feb. 14. She will be reevaluated on Friday, March 5, and is expected to be cleared to return to training with the team at that time, putting her several weeks ahead of schedule on her rehabilitation timeline. She has been jogging and shooting on her own in practice for about a week.
