Defender Brandi Chastain, left off the roster the past two events, returns to the U.S. women's national team for the 11th Algarve Cup March 14-20 in southern Portugal.

Chastain, defender Kylie Bivens and midfielder Lori Chalupny were named to the Americans' 20-woman roster for the annual event in Portugal after Coach April Heinrichs excluded them from the CONCACAF Olympic qualifying tournament in Costa Rica.

Chastain, returning from a broken foot sustained the United States' opener at last fall's Women's World Cup, took part in the Americans' Home Depot Center training camp in January but wasn't on the roster for the Four Nations event in China.

Bivens and Chalupny traveled to China but did not play, and they joined Chastain in the U.S. under-21 team's camp during the qualifying tournament.

Heinrichs is giving defender Joy Fawcett and midfielder Kristine Lilly time off during the Algarve Cup, in advance of the April 1 start to the pre-Olympic residency at Home Depot Center.

Forward Heather O'Reilly, at 19 the youngest player in the U.S. pool, also was left off the roster and will instead accompany the under-21 team on its March 17-29 trek to China. O'Reilly was on the U.S. roster at Olympic qualifying but was the only player not to see game time.

The U.S. women are making their ninth trip to the Algarve Cup, the most prestigious annual ''friendly'' tournament in women's soccer. They'll face France (March 14 in Ferreiras), Denmark (March 16 in Quarteira) and Sweden (March 18 in Lagos) in group play and finish with a placement match on March 20.

The United States has won two Algarve titles, in 2000 and last year. China and Sweden also have won the Algarve Cup twice, and Norway has won it four times, the last in 1998.
