U.S. Women’s national team coach Tony DiCicco has named 10 more players to his residency camp roster that will eventually number 26 when the USA begins full-time training in early January, 1999. DiCicco named the first 13 players for residency camp on October 29 and will name the final three players following the team’s final training camp and match of the year in mid-December. All 26 players will live in Orlando for the five months leading up the tournament. The American women will undergo the same camp program at the same facility that they used to prepare for both the 1995 FIFA Women’s World Cup and the 1996 Olympics. DiCicco named eight players currently playing college soccer, five seniors and three juniors, but three of those have seen extensive national team duty. Forward Cindy Parlow and midfielder Tiffany Roberts were both members of the 1996 Olympic gold medal team while defender Lorrie Fair was chosen as an alternate. Also named was midfielder Laurie Schwoy, a veteran of the last two U.S. Under-20 Nordic Cup Teams, whose full national team duty has been limited in the past year by injury. She has rebounded to have a fine season for North Carolina. “This group of athletes represent both our drive for the Women’s World Cup title this summer and for World Cup and Olympic gold in the future,” said DiCicco. “As in the past residency programs, we have invited young stars that have proven themselves at the international game as well as the future stars for the United States.” DiCicco also named U.S. Under-20 captain Michelle French, a midfielder at the University of Portland who will try to win a spot at outside fullback, and Notre Dame sweeper Jen Grubb, who debuted for the full national team in 1995 and has 11 caps to her credit. DiCicco named college soccer’s two most dominating forwards in North Carolina’s Parlow, last year’s Hermann and MAC Award winner, and Florida’s Danielle Fotopoulos, who broke the NCAA scoring record this season, previously held by U.S. teammates Mia Hamm and Tiffeny Milbrett. Also named were two more goalkeepers, Tracy Ducar, who has paired with Briana Scurry on the U.S. roster for most of the last two years, and Siri Mullinix, the starting net-minder for North Carolina and member of the U-20 National Team. DiCicco also named Sara Whalen, who has earned 20 caps over the last two years at both defender and flank midfielder. Following are the 23 players called in to the residency camp: Goalkeepers — Tracy Ducar (20 caps/0 goals), Siri Mullinix (0/0), Briana Scurry (77/0). Defenders — Lorrie Fair (35/1), Joy Fawcett (125/17), Jen Grubb (11/1), Carla Overbeck (127/7), Christie Pearce (36/2), Kate Sobrero (12/0), Sara Whalen (23/1). Midfielders — Michelle Akers (126/98), Brandi Chastain (78/16), Julie Foudy (137/24), Michelle French (1/0), Tiffany Roberts (67/6), Laurie Schwoy (3/0), Tisha Venturini (110/37).
