Mia Hamm scored a goal and set up strikes by Aly Wagner and Abby Wambach, and Catherine Reddick came up big repeatedly in the back as the U.S. women's national team wrapped up its home preparations for the Athens Olympics with a 3-1 victory over China in East Hartford, Conn.
Wagner scored a sizzling goal in the 14th minute, Hamm doubled the advantage on a 33rd-minute breakaway, and Wambach headed home a Hamm corner kick in the 69th for the final margin of victory before 15,093 at Rentschler Field.
The win improved the Americans to 15-1-2 in 2004 heading into their Aug. 11 Olympic opener against Greece in Heraklio on Crete. The U.S. women depart for Greece on Monday to begin final preparations for the Athens Games.
''I am really pleased — it could not have gone better,'' U.S. coach April Heinrichs said. ''Everybody played well. I liked the way we attacked and went at China with courage and confidence.
''Obviously, we have great respect for them, so when you can play aggressively and with that kind of confidence against a team that is as strong as China, it's a really good sign moving forward.''
Referee Sandra Hunt issued nine yellow cards in a physical but well-played match. The Americans owned a 20-6 shot advantage and appeared in charge from the start.
Wagner's goal was a beauty, a first-time strike from 14 yards that grazed the underside of the crossbar en route to the net. Julie Foudy, on the right flank, sent a ball into the box, and Hamm, at the near post, backheeled it to Wagner.
Reddick came up with two big plays over the next 20 minutes to prevent a Chinese goal and start the sequence for Hamm's strike.
In the 16th minute, Han Duan worked free on the left side of the box and faced goalkeeper Briana Scurry one-on-one. Scurry got a piece of Han's shot, but the ball ricocheted toward the far post. Reddick cleared it off the line.
Seventeen minutes later, Reddick stripped a Chinese attacker, and Christie Rampone played a long ball down the right flank for Wambach, who beat an offside trap near midfield. Wambach raced deep into Chinese territory as defenders gave chase, then fed Hamm to the left, at the top of the box. Hamm controlled the ball with her first touch, then fired to the upper-right corner for her 151st international goal.
China tied the score four minutes into the second half. Scurry got her hand to a free kick, but it fell to Han to the left of the goal. She chipped the ball over Scurry and two defenders to the right post, where Fan Yunjie poked it past Julie Foudy and tapped in from a yard.
Wambach netted her 28th international goal 20 minutes later, powerfully heading home Hamm's corner kick. It was the 135th assist U.S. Soccer has awarded Hamm.
