Angela Hucles scored two goals and the U.S. women's national team romped to a 5-1 triumph over France in its Algarve Cup opener Sunday in Ferreiras, Portugal.

Abby Wambach tallied for the sixth successive game, and Mia Hamm and Lindsay Tarpley also scored for the Americans.

Sonia Bompastor scored early in the second half for France, denying the U.S. women their eighth shutout in nine games this year.

Hucles had scored just one goal in 29 previous international appearances.

The United States, defending Algarve Cup champions, meets Denmark on Tuesday in Quarteira and Sweden on Thursday in Lagos. Placement games will be played Saturday.
