Cindy Parlow came off the bench to score two goals in the United States’ 3-2 come-from-behind win over Mexico Dec. 10 in Houston in the second to last game of the Glory Tour. The goals upped Parlow’s international total to 45 in 98 games. Mexico had never scored against the world champions before, but took advantage of U.S. mistakes to take a 2-1 lead on goals by Maribel Dominguez and Iris Mora. Kristine Lilly had given the host team a 1-0 lead with a 37th-minute blast set up by Mia Hamm. But Overbeck, playing in her second to last game for the United States, and Nikki Serlenga combined to give the ball up to Mexico. Overbeck couldn’t clear the subsequent through ball to Dominguez, who slotted it past substitute goalkeeper Hope Solo in the 57th minute. Eight minutes later, Solo roamed far from the U.S. penalty area to clear a ball, but the University of Washington sophomore only got the ball as far as Mora. The Mexican midfielder lobbed Solo from 50 yards out while the latter tried in vain to return to her net. In the 70th minute, Parlow got the equalizer with a savable shot that Mexico’s San Diego State goalkeeper Linnea Quinones got her hands on but couldn’t stop. Five minutes later, Mexico’s Monica Gonzalez, who played for Notre Dame in the Women’s College Cup the previous weekend, turned over the ball to Parlow, whose 25-yard blast to the upper right corner beat a diving Quinones. “It was an entertaining and fast paced game,” Hamm said. “You saw a lot of good things on both sides. Mexico is a young team and they have this youthful enthusiasm about them. They’re fearless and they’re fun to play against. We had some opportunities that we didn’t put away, and internationally, if you don’t do that, you get in trouble. We made some mistakes, but people came off the bench and played really well for us. The thing for us tonight was to make sure Carla Overbeck went out on a winning note in one of her last games.” “With 20 minutes left, I thought we would be alright because I felt that it was plenty of time for us to win,” U.S. coach April Heinrichs said. “We’d created plenty of chances in just a five-minute period. We’ve got a lot of leadership out on the field, and I knew as long as we were pursing excellence and kept our wits about us, we’d be okay. We saw two great goals by Cindy Parlow and composure from the whole team.” Notes: The United States plays Japan on Dec. 17 in Phoenix in the last game of the Glory Tour … Besides Quinones and Gonzalez, Mexico used other Mexican-American players: Portland reserve midfielder Ana Del Bosque, former Santa Clara defender Lisa Nanez and former Cal Poly defender Gina Oceguera.
