The U.S. women’s national team completed a weekend sweep of Argentina with a 7-0 pasting at the newly renovated Spartan Stadium in San Jose, Calif. “We played some wonderful attacking soccer, and I saw improvement in individual play as well as our team rhythm,” said U.S. head coach Tony DiCicco. “Argentina is still an emerging nation in women’s soccer, but these games gave us confidence and were a good step towards getting us closer to our best possible performance.” Midfielder Kristine Lilly opened the scoring in just the third minute, tallying for the 56th time in her international career. Michelle Akers met Shannon MacMillan’s corner with a fine diving header that was blocked on the goal line by an Argentine defender, but Lilly flicked the rebound over with her heel and into the goal from a yard out. Lilly made her 148th international appearance, passing the men’s career record of 147 held by Majed Abdullah of Saudi Arabia. She is closing in on the world record of 151 caps held by retired Norway star Heidi Stoere. Mia Hamm set up the second U.S. goal when she beat her defender in the left side of the penalty box and cut the ball back to Tiffeny Milbrett, who chopped a left-footed shot into the goal from six yards out. Michelle Akers added the third goal in the 37th minute, leaped over the shorter Argentina defense to head home Hamm’s corner kick. Milbrett tallied again in the 47th minute on a similar play to her first, as Hamm laid a pass back for Milbrett to knock home from six yards. Brandi Chastain converted a 55th-minute penalty after Hamm was fouled in the box. Julie Foudy then scored from close range in the 68th minute, and the final U.S. goal came in the 76th, when Debbie Keller’s shot was inadvertently redirected into the net by Andrea Arce of Argentina. Hamm did not score in the match, but assisted on three U.S. goals. “I just want to win,” she said afterward. “And if that means passing the ball, I’ll do that. We scored some really great goals, and, as a team, we love to play entertaining soccer for the fans.” The U.S. will regroup in Indianapolis on May 5 in preparation for matches against Iceland May 8 at Kuntz Stadium in Indianapolis and May 10 at Lehigh Univ. in Bethlehem, Pa.
