The U.S. women’s national team will be among four top-ranked women’s soccer teams competing in the 1998 Goodwill Games, which will be held in New York City. The U.S., along with Norway, China and Denmark, will make up the four-team field for the first women’s soccer competition in Goodwill Games history. The format will consist of semifinal matches on July 25, and medal matches (gold and bronze) on July 27. China and Norway meet in one semifinal, while the U.S. and Denmark will square off in the other. All matches will be played at the newly-renovated Mitchel Athletic Complex in Long Island. “We are looking to the Goodwill Games as an excellent preview to the competition we will face at the 1999 Women’s World Cup,” said U.S. coach Tony DiCicco, who will lead the national team at the Algarve Cup in Portugal next week. “Fans who come to the Goodwill Games will not only see the best teams in the world compete, but experience the high level of excitement and quality of play that will be on display at the World Cup.”
