The U.S. women’s national team will play its first domestic games since winning the gold medal at the 1996 Olympics this spring, when it will embark on a six-game victory tour.
The U.S. women will open against France in Greensboro, N.C. on April 24, and face the French again in Tampa, Fla. on April 27. They then face South Korea in Milwaukee (May 2), and St. Charles, Ill. (May 4) and conclude the tour on the West Coast against England in San Jose, Calif. (May 9) and Portland, Ore. (May 11).
“This tour is more than a celebration for the team,” said U.S. Soccer secretary-general Hank Steinbrecher. “It is a chance for everyone involved with their success to thank their fans for the support they’ve received during their incredible growth over the last few years.”
“This tour will give us a wonderful closure to the 1996 Olympics,” said U.S. coach Tony DiCicco. “[It will also] allow us to integrate some younger players into the team as we prepare to compete and win the 1999 Women’s World Cup in the United States.”
Prior to the victory tour, the U.S. women will travel to Australia for three matches Feb. 28, March 2, and March 5.
