By Scott French, Senior Editor The U.S. U-19 squad, all college freshmen or high schoolers, take on three regional foes next week in Trinidad & Tobago for a berth in FIFA's initial U-19 women's world championship, which will be held Aug. 17-Sept. 1 in Edmonton, Vancouver and Victoria, British Columbia. Those who should know — U.S. Soccer staff coaches, WUSA scouts, keen observers of the women's game — are declaring that this group of young players is on par with the generation that produced Mia Hamm, Kristine Lilly, Tiffeny Milbrett, Julie Foudy and the other 30-something (or nearly so) legends who still star for the U.S. women's national team. Much of the attention is going to U-19 coach Tracey Leone's attacking foursome: Lindsay Tarpley, Kelly Wilson, Heather O'Reilly and Megan Kakadelas. The players situated behind them — particularly midfielders Jill Oakes, Lori Chalupny and Manya Makoski. and defenders Leslie Osborne, Amy Steadman and Keeley Dowling — also are considered exquisite talents. April Heinrichs already has called up for full national team action Wilson, a sophomore next fall at the University of Texas, and O'Reilly, a New Jersey high school junior; the U.S. coach said she would have invited four U-19 players in to camp for the Finland match last Saturday had they not been preparing for the qualifying tournament. One WUSA scout said that Tarpley, Wilson, O'Reilly and Osborne “could play in the WUSA right now.” Tarpley will be a freshman at North Carolina in the fall; Osborne was a freshman standout on Santa Clara's NCAA championship squad last fall. The Americans take on Suriname, Haiti and Costa Rica in Group B of the May 7-11 CONCACAF qualifier, games they should win in routs. They should not suffer from the absences of University of Tennessee standout Dowling, who is recovering from an ankle injury, and Steadman, who has nearly recuperated a torn anterior cruciate ligament suffered last fall. Jamaica, Mexico, Panama and Trinidad & Tobago compete in Group A, with the winner U.S. U-19 ROSTER CONCACAF Qualifying Tournament May 7-11 in Trinidad & Tobago (College or hometown in parentheses) GOALKEEPERS: Ashlyn Harris (Satellite Beach, Fla.), Megan Rivera (Auburn University).
