A record 12 national youth champions will be crowned at the annual Snickers US Youth Soccer national championships, which have moved to Lawrence, Ind., after two years at Disney’s Wide World of Sports complex in Florida. For the first time, boys and girls national champions will be determined in the Under-14 and Under-15 age groups. Champions in the Under-16, Under-17, Under-18 and Under-19 divisions will also be crowned. Games will be played July 25-29 at the new Lawrence Park Soccer Complex, located 14 miles northeast of downtown Indianapolis. More than 7,200 teams participated in qualifying in all 50 states. California-South qualified the most teams for the national finals with five, followed by Georgia and Ohio-South with four. Colorado, Eastern New York, Eastern Pennsylvania, Maryland and North Texas each have three teams entered. The Colorado Rush Nike Under-19 girls are trying to become the second team ever to win three consecutive national titles. The Central Valley Mercury (San Jose, Calif.) was the first, starting its streak at Under-16s in Indianapolis in 1996 and following with victories in 1997 and 1998. Two more Under-19 teams, the FC Delco Black (West Chester, Pa.) boys and Challenge 81/82 (Klein, Texas) girls, and the San Diego Surf Under-18 girls are also participating in the national championships for the third time. A pair of 2000 girls champions from California-South — the Surf and Under-17 Southern California Blues — return seeking back-to-back titles.
