On the eve of its departure for Barbados for the Nov. 15 World Cup qualifying game, the USA beat the Miami Fusion, 2-1, in a closed-door scrimmage. After Eddie Lewis opened the scoring in the 10th minute with a goal off a corner kick, the Fusion answered right back as forward Welton found the back of the net in the 12th minute. Striker Ante Razov tallied the gamewinner in the 19th minute by directing a Chris Klein cross past Fusion goalkeeper Garth Lagerwey. The U.S. controlled most of the scoring opportunities in the second half but could not convert. Earnie Stewart gave the Americans its best chance but his blast from the top of the box late in the game went off the crossbar. It was a 70-minute scrimmage.
