The following are statements made after the U.S. loss to Colombia in a friendly Feb. 3 in Miami: Defender Jeff Agoos Describing the play that led to the Colombia goal: ôWe got caught out of shape on a counter attack, and we tried to slow them up. I went out to mark the guy with the ball and he slipped one inside to a runner that was coming through. ôIt was unlucky that it went through past Greg (Vanney), and the guy just hit it into the top of the net. It was a bad goal for us to give up, and weÆve got to be better at defending those kind of plays. ôThis game was a lesson learned as we look ahead to the game with Mexico. ItÆs better to learn that lesson in a friendly as compared to a World Cup qualifier. We learn more from our mistakes than from our successes, and tonight weÆve got a little bit of learning to do.ö Coach Bruce Arena ôWe looked better this week than we did last weekend against China. The opponent was much better. We did some very good things for a number of minutes in the game. Obviously we didnÆt have the ability to break down their defense in the last third of the field, but they did a good job all day of getting a foot in and breaking up the play. ôWe were solid defensively, but we fell asleep on the goal. Give them credit. They countered and got a good look at the goal and finished the play. Overall our performance was much better this week than last week. ôYou could still see that at the end of the game we didnÆt have the legs to push the game and try to get the goal back. The performance was a solid performance, but obviously weÆre disappointed with the loss. Colombia was a good opponent and this was a good test for our guys. ôI was disappointed that we were not able to get a goal. In the first half we created some decent chances, and had a little bit of the run of play, but we just couldnÆt make the last pass or finish off the play. ôIn the second half we werenÆt as sharp, and in the last 10 minutes we were at fault for not putting more pressure on them.ö Josh Wolff on his return to action following surgery in January: ôIt was good to get out there again. Our team kind of lost its legs there a bit at the end, and they didnÆt allow us to get to many good attacking runs going. When we did get forward we didnÆt get many good balls in, and towards the end of the game thatÆs what we needed to do. We werenÆt able to take care of the ball, and they got a few counters. That hurt us tonight.ö Tony Meola on the Colombia goal: ôWe had the right numbers, but I donÆt know if we had great positioning. The guy spun Agoos, and we still had a little time to recover, but he slipped the ball across the top of the box. The guy who scored actually had a poor first touch, but it ended up working for him, and he just hammered it right at my head. ôI thought that up until the end, when we had to throw everybody forward, they didnÆt have too many good chances. ôAs a team you can see a change in attitude and fitness on the field as we get closer to the Mexico game. WeÆre making progress, and we should be in good shape for that game.ö Carlos Llamosa on the emotional aspects of playing against his native country: ôAfter they played the national anthems, it didnÆt matter who we were playing. Everything was normal to me, just another game. I play against every team the same way, no matter where they are from. ôWe struggled a little bit in the last 10 minutes with our fitness, but we are getting better, and by the time we play Mexico weÆll be in good shape. Midfielder Chris Armas ôThey were a pretty good team, and we held our own and then some. They pressure well and have some very creative players, and for the most part we held them in check. Like any good team they got one good chance and put it in the back of the net. ôFor the most part we played well today and didnÆt give up too many chances, but we got caught on that one counterattack. I thought we were at least good enough today to hold them scoreless. The key is to stay tuned defensively in for 90 minutes. ôWe got tired toward the end, and itÆs tough to come from behind when you are feeling tired. Since January 5 (when the first training camp of 2001 opened) weÆve made great progress, and our goal is to be in top form by February 28 when we play Mexico. ôWeÆre very confident as we head into that game against Mexico. WeÆll be playing at home with a great mix of European and MLS guys, in front of a pro-American crowd where everything is on the line. I feel very confident in this team and IÆm looking forward to that game. Midfielder Cobi Jones ôWith the players we had we played very well today. We dominated most of the game, but we let down for that one moment and thatÆs all it takes. In the week that IÆve been with the team, and having watched the game against China, I think the team has definitely improved in a short amount of time. YouÆll see a very solid team on the field when we step out against Mexico. ôPhysically I felt fine out there today. Funny enough, I felt like I could run all day. And thatÆs good, because there was a lot of running back and forth. ôI think our chances of winning the game against Mexico are very good. We have a solid team, and weÆll be playing in front of a home crowd of American fans, so I think everything is in our favor to get all three points in Columbus.ö
