The United StatesÆ run of futility against Ecuador continued June 7 in Columbus with a 0-0 tie. The Americans have not beaten Ecuador in their eight meetings, which date back to 1984. Ecuador has won four and tied four. The friendly game served as a warmup for the USAÆs three World Cup qualifiers in the next 23 days. Jovan Kirovski made his first appearance with the national team of 2001. The 25-year-old Sporting Lisbon forward produced the best U.S. chances. His solid outing spells good news for Coach Bruce Arena, who lost attackers Clint Mathis and Josh Wolff to injuries earlier this week. Kirovski played upfront with Joe-Max Moore, who also has missed Hexagonal action because of injury. John OÆBrien, who has been out of national team action since the Olympic Games because of a series of injuries, performed well in the five-man midfield. But Captain Claudio Reyna had an uneventful evening manning the U.S. central midfield. The USA played a 3-5-2 formation, perhaps because of the absence of left back David Regis. (The Americans employed a 4-4-2 in its first three games of the Hexagonal.) Making their first appearances for the USA were Joe Enochs (of relegated German Second Division club Osnabrueck), John Thorrington (English third-tier Huddersfield Town), Pablo Mastroeni (Miami Fusion) and Mike Petke (MetroStars). ôIt was good to see some of the new young faces and to get a cap for guys like Petke and Mastroeni, who I thought played well,ö Arena said. ôThorrington and Enochs made it four newcomers out there, so that was good to see. ôWhat we were really pleased with was that we got Moore, OÆBrien, Kirovski and our European players some fitness before the match next weekend.” The USA squad will reconvene on Monday in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., to begin a final week of preparation before two important World Cup qualifiers across five days, beginning with a Jamaican showdown in Kingston June 16 (live on ABC at 2 p.m. ET). Following that match, the U.S. will return home to Foxboro, Mass., for a meeting with Trinidad and Tobago at Foxboro Stadium on June 20 (7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2).
