The USA and Paragauy have drawn 2-2 in their friendly in San Diego. The U.S. took a 2-1 lead five minutes after the intermission through a superb diving header from Marcelo Balboa, who was just inched off the ground when he connected with the ball. Eric Wynalda sent a fine ball to Alexi Lalas as he made a run down the left side of the box. The MetroStars’ defender first-timed a cross back towards the penalty spot, where Balboa dove and sent a powerful header into the far corner of the goal. The Americans controlled much of the first 25 minutes of the half, but Paraguayan substitute Julio Yegros was taken down in the box in the 74th minute by Juergen Sommer after Alexi Lalas had been beaten. Francisco Arce stepped up and drilled the resulting penalty kick into the upper right corner to even the match at 2-2. Several yellow cards marred the final fifteen minutes of play, but the U.S. had one good final chance when late sub Preki Radosavljevic took Mike Burns’ short free kick, turned a defender inside-out, and fired a left-footed rocket that Paraguayan keeper Diaz did well to parry wide. The U.S. played without its D.C. United players, as the MLS season opener between United and the Miami Fusion is tomorrow. U.S. national team players will now return to their clubs before convening in April for a match against Austria. A game summary will be posted shortly.
