The U.S. and Mexico are locked in a scoreless draw at halftime of their World Cup Qualifying match in Mexico City. However, Jeff Agoos of the USA has been sent off for a retaliatory foul against Mexico’s Pavel Pardo, and the U.S. will play a man down for the remainder of the match. The first half was fast-paced, with both teams having excellent scoring opportunities. Eric Wynalda has been dangerous for the U.S., which had one shot ricochet off the post and another rebound shot roll just wide. Mexico’s Benjamin Galindo also narrowly missed. Alexi Lalas, back in the U.S. lineup, has helped the American defense keep Mexico at bay. Steve Sampson included him with Marcelo Balboa, Agoos, Thomas Dooley, Eddie Pope, John Harkes, Cobi Jones, Joe-Max Moore, Roy Wegerle and Wynalda in the starting lineup. Tab Ramos, still bothered by a groin injury, did not start for the U.S. Harkes received a yellow card during the first half, and he will now have to sit out the qualifier against Canada on Nov. 9 for accumulated cautions. Mexico’s Alberto Garcia Aspe, also cautioned, will miss the Tricolores Nov. 9 clash with Costa Rica.
