The USA has defeated Costa Rica 2-1 at Stanford Stadium in Palo Alto, Calif. With the victory, the USA clinches a berth in the final round of CONCACAF qualifying for World Cup ’98.
The U.S. struggled in the final minutes, yielding a free kick and several corner kicks to the inspired Costa Ricans, but the Ticos were unable to net an equalizer.
Alexi Lalas received a yellow card in the 90th minute of play; it is his second booking in qualifying, so he will be suspended for the match against Guatemala in San Salvador, El Salvador next Saturday.
