Michelle Akers, the U.S. women’s national team’s all-time leading goalscorer, has agreed to join the Tampa Bay Extreme for the 1998 W-League season. The Extreme is one of 15 teams that will comprise the recently formed W-1 elite division of the W-League. The W-1 season is scheduled to kick off on May 15. “The Extreme is honored to have a player of Michelle’s caliber on our roster,” said Tampa Bay head coach Rui Farias. “Michelle has always been a pioneer in women’s soccer, and we hope this signing opens the door for the rest of the women’s national team to play on our home soil.”
