The 1998 W-League champion Raleigh Wings have signed former North Carolina and current U.S. national team forward Cindy Parlow. “Cindy is one of the most recognized players in soccer today, and her desire to play for the Wings is important for our soccer fans,” said Raleigh GM Dr. Hugo Uyttenhove. “It will give them a chance to continue to see Cindy play in this area.” Parlow, the 1997 and 1998 Hermann Trophy and MAC award winner, is currently preparing for the 1999 Women’s World Cup at residency camp with the national team in Florida. “[Cindy’s] commitment to the national team is a situation that is not bad,” said Wings head coach Bill Palladino, who is also an assistant coach at North Carolina. “It is a well-established fact that we won’t have Cindy until after the World Cup.” The Wings won the inaugural W-1 title in W-League play behind the play of national team sweeper Carla Overbeck, former national team star Wendy Gebauer, and national team pool players Thori Bryan and Robin Confer.
