Former Watford FC chairman Sir Elton John could return to the club two months after renouncing his title of honorary life president in protest at the way the club was being run. The wealthy singer is now considering a return to the club after being critical of former chairman Graham Simpson and chief executive Mark Ashton, both of whom have now left. John has met with players and staff after talks with manager Brendan Rodgers.
“We have spoken a lot in the last couple of weeks,” said Rodgers. “He is one of the iconic figures associated with Watford Football Club. People like Elton John have been involved here for many years. For me, it is important that people like that have a part in the future as well. I was delighted when he accepted my invitation to come to the training ground, and he was great with the players and the staff.”
The singer’s first spell at the club began in 1976 when the team was playing in the fourth division, but under John’s chairmanship and with Graham Taylor as manager they rose to the top flight and played in the 1984 FA Cup final.
