It’s a question that’s been asked before, but Frank Dell’Apa of the Boston Globe gives it a closer look: how will David Beckham be traveling with his new L.A. Galaxy teammates? That may sound like an odd question, but when you consider that Beckham is a world-class athlete and A-list celebrity, it would be awkward for him not to travel first-class and wait in president’s club lounges when prior to departures.
Conversely, it would be weird for his teammates if he were afforded special traveling privileges due to his celebrity. As Dell’Apa points out, “Celebrities and athletes earning mega salaries simply do not mix with the public in transportation centers in the U.S. these days, and Beckham will not be an exception.” Why? Because, he says, it’s impractical for a celebrity of his stature to be that much in the public eye as a safety precaution as much as anything else. Indeed, safety measures will have to be put in place everywhere he goes.
For the time being, the Galaxy management is keeping mum: “I can’t comment on travel arrangements for the Galaxy this year,” Galaxy president Alexi Lalas said, adding: “This is a very unique situation we are going into, and I think how our players react to it and how David faces it will go a long way to how successful we are on the field.”
