Losers:

Defending champ D.C. UNITED, which suspended Freddy Adu following his midweek complaint about a lack of playing time, opened its playoff campaign with a scoreless tie with Chicago. Also in the East, top seed NEW ENGLAND fell, 1-0, to the MetroStars, for whom Amado Guevara scored on a long-range drive. In the West, COLORADO and DALLAS served up scoreless tie.

Manchester City fell, 1-0, to Arsenal in a game that saw American midfielder Claudio Reyna limp off with an injury in the 73rd minute.

DAVID BECKHAM was red-carded during Real Madrid's 2-1 loss to Valencia for sarcastically applauding after getting a yellow card for dissent from referee Arturo Dauden Ibanez. It was the same offense that got Beckham's England teammate Wayne Rooney ordered off during a Man U Champions League match last month.
