Defense-minded Once Caldas, which had won its Libertadores Cup title on PKs over Boca Juniors, had survived a legitimate-looking Benni McCarthy goal called back for offside in the first half. UNAM PUMAS became the first team to capture back-to-back Mexican titles since the split-season format was introduced in 1996. Losers:
Francisco Palencia, the 31-year-old veteran of two World Cups, who would have been the CHIVAS USA's biggest Mexican star, will remain at Chivas Guadalajara for at least six more months. Chivas owner Jorge Vergara has backed down on earlier statements that Palencia was obligated by contract to join the new MLS franchise.

A bomb scare that proved to be a hoax at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium forced the abandonment of the REAL MADRID-REAL SOCIEDAD game on Saturday with three minutes left. The Basque separatist group ETA reportedly called in the threat, in a similar manner it had before a series of recent bombings in Spanish cities, just after Sociedad, a Basque team, scored the tying goal.
