WINNERS:

NOTRE DAME became the first team other than North Carolina to win more than one NCAA Division I women's title when the Irish beat UCLA, 4-3, on penalty kicks, after their game ended 1-1. Favored Notre Dame survived an own goal by Icelandic defender Gudrun Gunnarsdottir in the 60th minute and a penalty called on Canadian All-American Melissa Tancredi in the 86th minute (Kendal Billingsley's shot was saved by  Erika Bohn). Katie Thorlakson scored for the Irish on a penalty kick  in the 74th minute to finish with 23 goals and 23 assists.

UC SANTA BARBARA advanced to the Men's College Cup for the first time  with a 4-1 win over visiting Virginia Commonwealth in front of 11,214 fans at Harder Stadium. The crowd was the largest to ever watch a college tournament game other than at final four games. The Gauchos are joined by defending champion Indiana, Maryland and Duke at the four final in Carson, Calif., Dec. 10-12.

America right back STEVE CHERUNDOLO scored HANNOVER 96's first goal in a 2-0 Bundesliga win over Hamburg when he shot low from 11 yards under HSV goalie Martin Pieckenhagen. The win moved Hannover into fourth place.

Dutch leader PSV EINDHOVEN broke a 33-year-old Dutch record by going 1,110 minutes without conceding a goal after its 4-0 win over Graafschap. American DaMARCUS BEASLEY entered the game in the 76th minute and assisted on Jefferson Farfan's goal one minute later.

American striker BRIAN McBRIDE set up Andy Cole's goal with a flick-on in Fulham's 1-0 win at Norwich. McBride, who has come off the bench in nine Premier League games this season, was making his fourth start for Fulham, which also saw American defender Carlos Bocanegra go the full 90 minutes. Bocanegra received his second yellow card of the season in the game that saw Fulham move five points clear of the relegation zone.

LOSERS:

GREGG BERHALTER was ejected in the 65th minute after receiving his second yellow card in ENERGIE COTTBUS' 3-1 loss to Eintracht Frankfurt. Cottbus' fourth straight loss moves it to last place of the German Second Division. Cottbus dropped from the First Division in 2003 and missed promotion last season by goal difference.

American defender GREG VANNEY and his French club BASTIA suffered an embarrassing 1-0 defeat to last-place Istres, which had never notched a First Division win. Vanney had to be carried off in the first half after his own keeper struck him in the chin while trying to fist away a high ball, but Vanney returned minutes later and lasted the full 90 minutes for Bastia, which is one point above the relegation zone.

Fourth-seeded VIRGINIA's 3-0 loss to unseeded Duke, which had twice lost to Virginia in the regular season, sends the Cavaliers packing at the quarterfinal stage for the fourth time since Coach George Gelnovatch took over for five-time national champion winner Bruce Arena in 1996. Virginia's best performance under Gelnovatch was a runner-up finish in 1997.
