Winners:
CHRISTIAN GOMEZ (D.C. United 3, Kansas City 2), FRANKIE HEJDUK (Columbus 2, Real Salt Lake 0) and TAYLOR TWELLMAN (New England 2, MetroStars 2) each notched a pair of goals on Saturday. Twellman's goals kept New England undefeated this season and the Metros winless at home in five games. Hejduk's strikes ended the Columbus' four-game losing streak. And Gomez's double pulled D.C. United into third place of the Eastern Conference.
Los Angeles captain PETE VAGENAS, who stumbled and missed an open goal from four yards during last week's loss to Salt Lake, redeemed himself on Saturday with a powerful header for the Galaxy's gamewinner in its 2-1 victory over San Jose.
The English FA Cup final was decided on a penalty-kick tiebreaker for the first time in the competition's 133-year history as ARSENAL came out ahead against Manchester United following a scoreless tie. American keeper Tim Howard remained on the bench for Man U, which had dominated the game.
German Second Division club ENERGIE COTTBUS, for whom American defender Gregg Berhalter played 26 games this season, lost, 3-2, to Karlsruhe on the final day of the season but avoided relegation to the third tier thanks to finishing with a better goal difference (-13) than Eintracht Trier (-14), which tied Saarbrueken, 1-1, in its last game to finish even on points with Cottbus. Last season, Cottbus missed promotion to the First Division on goal difference.
Losers:
After its 5-2 loss to Dallas on Sunday, CHIVAS USA has a league-high 21 goals against. COLORADO, a 2-1 loser to Chicago, is second worst with 15 goals against.
RUUD GULLIT, coach of Dutch club Feyenoord, for which American Cory Gibbs started in defense, resigned after his club finished a disappointing fourth place and won just one of its last six games.
GLASGOW CELTIC would have won its second straight Scottish Premier League title with a win over Motherwell but gave up two goals in the last three minutes to fall, 2-1, while Rangers clinched the title by one point with a 1-0 win over Hibernian. In 2003, Celtic saw the title slip away on the last day as well, losing out to Rangers on goal difference.
