JONATHAN SPECTOR and English Premier League club Charlton came out on top in an FA Cup third-round clash that featured an American on each team. Spector went the full 90 at right back in a 4-2 win at second-tier Sheffield Wednesday, for which Frank Simek played the full game. Keeper Brad Friedel and Blackburn downed second-tier Queens Park Rangers, 3-0. American Eddie Lewis played the full 90, his 29th game in all competitions this season, in second-tier Leeds' 1-1 tie with Premier League Wigan. Also requiring a replay will be Reading, which rested Americans Marcus Hahnemann and Bobby Convey and tied West Brom, 1-1.
LIVERPOOL FAN Adrian Hayward, 42, won $43,880 by placing a bet $350 bet that Xabi Alonso would score a goal from his own half this season. The Spaniard, whose attempts to do so several times last season inspired Hayward's wager, managed the feat on Saturday during a 5-3 win over Luton Town in the FA Cup after Luton's keeper left his goal for a stoppage time corner kick at the other end.
CHIVAS USA has re-signed its three biggest stars: Ramon Ramirez, Juan Francisco 'Paco' Palencia and Juan Pablo Garcia. Palencia and Garcia joined the club for the final third of last season. Chivas USA hopes to finalize negotiations with veteran Mexican central defender Claudio Suarez this week.
Losers:
MANCHESTER UNITED, fielding mainly reserves, including American keeper Tim Howard, was held, 0-0, in the third round of FA Cup play by semipro Burton Albion, which ranks 105 spots below Man U in England's hierarchy of leagues. Also in FA Cup play, Brian McBride rested and Carlos Bocanegra sat out injured as Fulham fell, 2-1, to fourth-tier Leyon Orient.
ROY KEANE's debut for Glasgow Celtic was ruined when second-tier Clyde downed the Scottish Premier League leader, 2-1, in the third round of the Scottish Cup.
COLOMBIAN SOCCER continues to be plagued by violence. National team forward Elson Becerra was shot and killed in a bar while on holiday in Cartagena, Colombia. The 27-year-old played his club ball for Al-Jazeera in the United Arab Emirates. He is the 12th Colombian player to be murdered in the past two decades.
