Winners:
The U.S. U-20 national team opened its World Youth Championship campaign with a 1-0 upset win over Argentina, which has won three of the last five titles. CHAD BARRETT scored on a 39th-minute header off a deflected cross from UCLA teammate MARVEL WYNNE. The Americans could have extended their led but Freddy Adu hit the post on the penalty kick he drew in the second half. The USA faces Germany Tuesday (live on Fox Soccer Channel, 2:30 pm ET).
The CHICAGO FIRE notched its fourth win in five games with a 2-0 triumph over West leader Dallas, which was without injured striker Eddie Johnson while Carlos Ruiz lasted only 10 minutes before being stretchered off with an ankle injury. Nate Jaqua, who scored a hat trick last week, and Slovak Lubos Reiter struck for the Fire. Reiter's goal marked his first in MLS.
NEW ENGLAND's 2-0 win over Kansas City on a Sasha Victorine own goal and a strike by Pat Noonan increased the Revs' undefeated streak to 11 games, tying it for the longest undefeated streak to start a season with the 1996 Los Angeles Galaxy and the 2000 Kansas City Wizards.
Brazilian ADRIANO scored twice in INTER MILAN's 2-0 win over Roma in the first leg of the Italian Cup final, whose second leg is Wednesday. REAL BETIS won the Spanish Cup with a 2-1 overtime win over Osasuna, which is coached by Mexican Javier Aguirre.
Losers:
HONDURAS, which qualified for the World Youth Championship out of CONCACAF by eliminating Mexico, was thrashed, 7-0, by Chile in its finals opener. FC Dallas midfielder Ramon Nunez played the full 90 for Honduras. CONCACAF's other representatives (besides the USA) fared a bit better, Canada tying Syria, 1-1, and Panama falling to Ukraine, 3-1.
MLS defending champ D.C. UNITED was shut out in its third straight game in a 0-0 tie at the METROSTARS, for whom Ante Razov had an uneventful debut upfront with Youri Djorkaeff, who is still looking for his second goal of the season. For its part, D.C. United's leading goalscorer in 2004, Alecko Eskandarian, made his 10th appearance of the season without hitting the net.
