The final two European representatives in the 1999 Women’s World Cup were decided Oct. 11, as Russia and Germany clinched berths to the finals in the USA. In Helsinki, a record crowd of 3,500 saw the Finns take an early lead when Terhi Uusi-Luomalahti scored on a 26th-minute penalty kick. The goal tied the aggregate score at 2-2, and had Finland hung on, it would have advanced on away goals. However, Russia rallied for an equalizer from Irina Grigorieva in the 32nd minute and then got the winner through Tatiana Egorova in the 73rd minute to advance 4-2 on aggregate. Germany drew 1-1 with Ukraine in Kiev, but had already thrashed the Ukrainians 5-0 in the first leg. Star forward Birgit Prinz, who scored twice in the first leg, tallied the lone German goal. Germany and Russia join Denmark, Italy, Norway and Sweden as European qualifiers for USA ’99. In addition, Brazil, Canada, China, Japan, North Korea and the host USA have qualified. The four remaining berths will go to the Oceania qualifying champion (the tournament is underway), two teams from the African qualifying tournament (Oct. 17-31 in Nigeria) and the winner of the Argentina-Mexico playoff.
