The Nigeria women’s national team won its third consecutive African championship Oct. 31, defeating Ghana, 2-0, in Abeokuta, Nigeria. Nigeria and Ghana had previously qualified for Africa’s two spots in the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup by winning their semifinals matches last week to earn berths to the championship game. The Super Falcons completed the tournament without allowing a goal and scored 28 times in five matches. In the championship game, Nigeria got a goal in the 43rd minute from Nkiru Okosieme and in the 64th minute from Stella Mbachu. The victory earned a shower of cash rewards for the Falcons, as each player earned 100,000 naira (approximately $1,200) each. The state military administrator for the area that covers Lagos, Col. Theophilus Bamigboye, also gave the team 250,000 naira (almost $3,000) while the Chairman of the Nigeria Football Association Abdulmumuni Aminu announced a personal donation of 100,000 naira. The Democratic Republic of Congo defeated Cameroon on penalty kicks for third place. 15 of the 16 berths for USA ’99 have now been filled, the final team will be decided when Mexico and Argentina meet in a two-leg playoff in December.
