‘I think it looks beautiful’

SOCCER AMERICA: How was the “Letterman” appearance?

BRANDI CHASTAIN: He is so damn funny. I had friends who used to gather to watch him as a group. And I thought he was funny then, but now. … When I was standing, waiting to go on, and he said his first line, I was like, “Oh my God.” He said, “I’m not going to talk to her like an athlete or a soccer player, but a woman!”

SA: Did your teammates give you a hard time about your nude photo in Gear magazine?

BC: You have to ask Julie [Foudy] about that. They put together the funniest video I’ve ever seen. It’s funny as hell.

SA: What was the defense’s best game in the first round?

BC: With the exception of the first two minutes ù I think the crowd noise really [contributed to] our lack of organization ù I think we did a good job against Nigeria.

They’re very fast, very technical, come at you with a head of steam. I thought we did a good job to stay organized. If we weren’t winning the first ball, we were winning the second ball. That was a test we hadn’t done in a while.

SA: What do you do in your spare time during the World Cup?

BC: We go shopping, looking for the sales. We do girl stuff, I guess. It’s a big slumber party.

SA: Have you watched many of the other games on television?

BC: Actually, we’ve tuned in to a few of them. I was watching going, “This looks so awesome on television. I think it looks beautiful.” I’ve been to France, I’ve watched the games in France on television, and I always love watching soccer. But I never thought the Women’s World Cup would look so beautiful.
