The United States and its two fellow CONCACAF nations, Mexico and Jamaica, will be placed in a pot with the five African qualifiers to World Cup ’98, FIFA announced today. The U.S. will be drawn into a four-team group with one of the eight seeded teams (Brazil, Argentina, France, Spain, Germany, Italy, Netherlands and Romania), a European team, and likely a South American or Asian team. The U.S. could very well face a rematch against Colombia, whom it defeated at USA ’94. FIFA also announced amnesty for players holding two yellow cards after the final rounds of qualification for France ’98, allowing those players to play in their country’s first World Cup match. The only exception would be for players booked twice (and thus sent off) in their final game or for players who received an immediate red card. Suspensions for these offenses will stand.
