Esse Baharmast, the American referee, made the correct call on a penalty against Brazil in a match June 23 and remains in the referee pool for the second round of France ’98. Baharmast was pilloried in the press throughout the world after awarding Norway a late penalty that sent the Europeans through to the second round at Morocco’s expense. Television replays appeared to show that there was no foul, but a local French station showed a camera angle different from the international feed. This angle clearly showed Brazilian defender Junior Baiano blatantly pulling at Norweigan forward Tore Andre Flo’s jersey just as the ball was being played into the box. Baharmast waited to see how the play would turn out before awarding the penalty (employing the “advantage” rule). FIFA has said that it feels the officiating in France has been excellent, stating that in only three games had officials done a subpar job. Baharmast, who is the first American referee to work more than one game in a World Cup, will be the fourth official for the France-Paraguay match June 28.
